Personal Protection

Protect your family's finances if life takes an unexpected turn

Personal protection helps you and your family manage the financial consequences of death, serious illness or being unable to work.

Each type of cover does a different job. Understanding the difference is the first step to choosing what, if anything, you need.

Three different risks

If you die

Life insurance

If you're seriously ill

Critical illness cover

If you can't work

Income protection

Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. FCA No. 1034779

How the three covers differ

No single policy covers every risk. Many people combine two or three, depending on their circumstances and budget.

  • Life insurance

Pays out: If you die during the term

What it pays: A lump sum or regular income

Often used for: Clearing a mortgage, replacing income for your family

  • Critical illness cover

Pays out: If you're diagnosed with a specified illness that meets the policy definition

What it pays: A lump sum

Often used for: Breathing space during treatment and recovery

  • Income protection

Pays out: If illness or injury stops you working, after a waiting period

What it pays: A monthly income

Often used for: Paying the bills during a long absence from work

Where to start

Good advice starts with your circumstances, not with a product.

These questions help work out which risks matter most to you. We can go through them together in a free initial conversation.

  • Who depends on your income, and for how long?
  • What would happen to the mortgage or rent?
  • How long would your employer pay you if you were off sick?
  • Do you have death in service or other cover through work?
  • What savings could you fall back on?
  • Do you run a business that depends on you?

Common questions

Do I need all three types of cover?

Not necessarily. Each covers a different risk, and the right mix depends on your circumstances, commitments and budget. Some people need one, some need all three, and some need none.

I have cover through work. Is that enough?

It may help, but workplace cover often ends when you leave the job, and the amounts may not match what your family would need. I'll take it into account.

Do I have to have a medical?

Not always. Insurers decide based on your age, health and the amount of cover. They may ask for a GP report or medical examination.

How much does advice cost?

The initial conversation is free and there's no obligation. Before anything is arranged, I'll explain the cost of any policy and how I'm paid.

What if I already have policies?

I can review existing cover to check it still matches your circumstances. It's usually best not to cancel anything until new cover is in place.

Protection policies pay out only on a valid claim and have no cash value unless stated. Cover is subject to underwriting and accurate disclosure.

Talk it through with me

Every family's situation is different. A conversation is the quickest way to work out which cover, if any, makes sense for you, and what it would cost.
